DPFs (Diesel Particulate Filters) are only fitted to diesel vehicles and have been compulsory on all vehicles since 2009.
They filter out the soot that is produced when your diesel engine combusts the fuel that powers your vehicle.
This reduces carbon emissions. It is for the most part self-cleaning (due to a process called passive regeneration), but it will wear out over time and need to be replaced (which is costly) or cleaned which is a cheaper option.
You normally need to have your DPF cleaned between 10 – 20,000 miles and signs that your DPF needs cleaning include:
- Your exhaust is billowing black smoke
- You are getting less miles to the gallon
- You can smell fumes when driving
- You have problems getting the engine to start
- Without cleaning or replacing, your vehicle will eventually break down
We usually complete a DPF clean within a day.
