Ideally, your car's wheels should be aligned after every 6000 miles of driving or once a year (whichever happens sooner).
How do I know when my wheels need aligning?
- your tyres will wear unevenly
- the steering is off centre when you are driving straight
- your car doesn't hold the road well and feels unstable
- your tyres screech when turning
It's also sensible to check wheel alignment after hitting large potholes and should also be done after your vehicle is involved in any kind of accident.
What does it involve?
Wheel alignment is the process of checking and adjusting the angle of your car's wheels in relation to one another and in relation to your car's body. Your car will be placed on an alignment rack and using sensors, a computer is used to measure the angles of the wheels which are then compared to the specifications for your particular vehicle. A technician will then align the wheel angles to their correct position.
As well as doing this, the technician will also check tyre pressure, suspension, ride height and steering components, amongst other things. After the alignment is done, you will get a printout showing the wheel angles before and after the alignment.
Wheel alignment also needs to be done after work on your suspension or steering components.
After your vehicle has undergone wheel alignment you should notice that your car holds the road better and steering is straight.
